Project in Practice
Project in Practice (40040) is a study activity which gives 15 ECTS-points. It is available as part of the masters degree only and you can only take the activity once.
A Project in Practice takes place in a company or organization and is completed by handing in a project report. The project report is marked with pass/fail with internal censorship.
The work has to be full-time (37 hours a week) in one block or part-time (18,5 hours a week) in two connecting blocks. The Project in Practice period has to be designed specifically so that it develops your theoretical and practical knowledge in relation to your specific degree. The work is unpaid but the host (the company or organization) may accommodate with contributions for transport, rent etc.
Which MSc programmes?
The possibility to do a Project in Practice does not apply to every MSc programme. It is visible in the curriculum for the specific study programme where Project in Practice is an option.

As for the MSc programme in Veterinary Medicine, there is a similar study activity suited specifically for that particular programme.
Why do a Project in Practice?
A Project in Practice is an individual project-oriented study activity which can give you:
- Experience with applying theories and methods in practice in a business or an organization
- A broader insight into and understanding of the work and social contexts that your field of study is a part of
- Work experience and understanding of a work and organization culture
- Experience with cross-disciplinary collaboration and communication.
Before you start
You sign up for a Project in Practice through KUnet > Self Service > Enrolment, Courses and Exam. When you apply, you choose from which department you would like to receive guidance. Every department has a Project in Practice course coordinator:
- Department of Large Animal Sciencest:
- Department of Agriculture and Ecology:
- Department of Basic Sciences and Environment:
- Department of Food Science:
- Department of Food and Resource Economics:
- Department of Plant Biology and Biotechnology:
- Department of Human Nutrition:
- Forest and Landscape: (landscape architecture), (landskabsforvaltning), (forestry)
- Department of Basic Animal and Veterinary Sciences:
Pre-approval and contract with the host organisation
Soon after registration, you have to contact the course coordinator who has to approve your Project in Practice stay. You can download the pre-authorization form here.
It is you responsibility to set up a contract with the company or organization. The following information should be included in the contract as a minimum:
- Types of tasks that you are going to work with
- Weekly work hours
- The duration of the Project in Practice
- Name and information on the organization's contact person
- Considerations on why this is relevant for your field of study
Click here to download the collaboration contract you need to use.
Midterm progress report
Approximately halfway through your Project in Practice you need to hand in or send a progress report to your supervisor (i.e. the course coordinator). You agree with the supervisor what form and length the status has to be.
Project report
In the finishing project report you have to document that you can reflect on the use of your field of study in a work-oriented context and that you can reflect on your learning process and outcome.
The report has to be turned in by the end of the block in which the stay took place. It is therefore recommended that you work on your project paper during your stay. The length of the report is approximately 15-20 pages.
The report has to consist of three main parts and an abstract:
Part 1 is about the concrete framework of your Project in Practice: a description of the company/organization, its purpose (who manages it, what does it produce, other goals), its organization (who makes the decisions, management structure, work division) and facilities, along with a description of the concrete work tasks or activities which you have engaged in during the stay.
Part 2 is the more scientifically oriented part in which you discuss which parts of the scientific foundation and methodology from your study background you have used to deal with the concrete work tasks described in Part 1. It should also include some considerations about the concrete knowledge and the specific methods which you have acquired during the stay.
Part 3 should describe your personal learning reflections: what have you learned (both from a subject-specific aspect and in relation to your qualifications in general); how did this learning take place (in which situations and contexts); and in what way did the Project in Practice contribute to your own professional and personal development.
An abstract in English needs to be sent to . This abstract will be available for other students to read (see the list of abstracts). To ensure that you include all relevant information in your abstract, we recommend that you use our template for abstracts.
